Listen to Norm Ullman as he talks about the change in attitude over time in the White Lake area regarding pollution

Check out the White Lake Environmental History Project website, where we just posted a broad ranging interview of former Whitehall city mayor, Norm Ullman, on the changes in community attitudes he has observed in the White Lake area community in relation to pollution.  To find the interview, go to the following links on the site:  History, Oral Histories, Oral History Resource Collection, and then Community Attitudes.

Listen to Norm as he talks about some of the initial concerns and how in earlier days, the top priority of community leaders was to protect jobs.  Norm talks about how the city of Whitehall hired an attorney to focus on concerns with pollution from the former Whitehall Leather Company that emerged in the 1990s and about local groups that pushed for cleanup of White Lake.  As is typical of Norm’s style, the interview is interesting and full of stories!

After you listen to the interview, come back and provide your feedback here.

  • What are your thoughts?
  • Do you have any similar stories to share?
  • Do you think community attitudes have changed? If so, how? If not, why not?
  • Anything else?

Thanks for stopping by!
